Where you choose to spend your hard-earned money has more power than most people realize—it can determine which local businesses thrive and which struggle to survive, shaping the very heart of our community.
When you choose to shop at locally owned businesses, you’re doing more than just ticking off items on your holiday list. You’re making a heartfelt investment in your community. Local shops help keep money circulating close to home—supporting jobs, strengthening the local economy, and helping unique, independent businesses continue to thrive.
This year, that support matters more than ever. Many small businesses are navigating rising costs, increased competition from online giants, and shifting consumer habits. Your choice to shop local becomes a lifeline, not just a convenience. It tells local entrepreneurs, makers, and artisans who have poured their hearts and souls into their business that their creativity and hard work matter.
Beyond economics, shopping local creates the kind of holiday magic you’ll never find in a corporate chain. Familiar faces greet you, receive personalized recommendations, and discover gifts with heart—items made or curated with intention. Every purchase becomes a story: the business owner who wrapped your present with care, the maker who crafted a one-of-a-kind piece, the shop that remembers your name.
Local businesses also give back in ways large corporations don’t. They sponsor youth programs, support nonprofits, donate to school fundraisers, and help build the character of neighborhoods. When you support them, you’re strengthening the entire fabric of our community.
This holiday season, consider shifting even a portion of your spending to local shops. It makes a big difference. Whether it’s a thoughtful handmade gift, a gift card to a favorite restaurant, or simply browsing a little boutique, your choice creates a ripple effect of positivity and support.
Shopping local isn’t just a purchase—it’s a powerful act of community care. And during the holidays, there’s no better gift.
Wichita has some fantastic women-owned businesses that are so much more interesting than corporate chains and big online shopping sites. A couple of years ago, I put out a blog post listing 22 Women-Owned Businesses to Shop Local, featuring my favorites and others recommended by my social media network.
I’m back with an updated list—and this year I’m adding more women-owned businesses you need to know about. (The businesses I've added this year are marked with an *.) This blog focuses on retail brick-and-mortar shops, and I’m excited to spotlight other types of women-owned businesses in the year ahead.
